Learn Whether Your Photo Essay Should Actually Be Written
What do you think a photo essay is? An essay about photographs or how the photography emerged? You will be surprised to discover that a photo essay is not something you ‘write’. Basically, a photo essay is a series of photographs that are bound by a common theme.
The similarities between a photo essay and a regular essay are evident. Every photo in your series is like a sentence that has a specific meaning. These photos (sentences) compose a definite story presenting the ideas you wish to express.
Some hints for writing a photo essay
- Begin with choosing a topic. If you are a talented photographer, you see the meaning behind the images. Taking pictures of an ordinary Birthday party, you should not only pay attention to the faces, dresses, presents, etc. You are expected to catch the theme of the party and the emotions of every guest.
- Research your topic. A photo essay is like a regular essay when it comes to research. You have to spend some time with the family whose party you will be shooting and discover the expectations of the birthday kid (if it is the kid) regarding the presents.
- Build your photo essay on emotions. Your photo essay should present a story of people’s emotions and impressions; do not shoot somebody just because he/she looks good. Take the pictures that matter!
- Make a thorough plan before you begin. Think of how many pictures you will need for your photo essay. Usually, a photo essay consists of no less than 10 pictures. Think what each of these 10 pictures should be about. Then simply look for similar situations during the party.
Remember that you have to present a unique story in your photo essay. Look for rare emotions and incorporate only the brightest images into your essay.
